Coffee Brewing Tips

1. Always use filtered or spring water for brewing. Using tap water can lead to unwanted flavors. Coffee should always be brewed with water that is between 195 F- 205 F to properly extract flavors. 2. When using an automatic drip coffee maker follow the manufacturer's recommendation for the amount of coffee to use. 3. When using a press pot the standard ratio of coffee to water is 1 tablespoon of course ground coffee to 4 oz of water. Brew the coffee for 4 minutes. 4. Whatever brewing method you use, you must make sure that everything you use is impeccably clean. Oils and coffee solids can build up and give off bitter flavors. 5. Invest in a burr grinder if you don’t already have one. Blade grinders have a very inconsistent grind that leads to uneven extraction. They have been popular mainly because of their lower cost compared to burr grinders. Burr grinders give you a very consistent grind for any type of brew method, from espresso to French press. Once you taste the difference you will never go back 6. Be sure to only grind what you need. Ground coffee starts losing its flavor as soon as it is ground. 7. Always store your coffee in an air-tight container away from heat and light. Coffee beans are porous and absorb flavors very easily. 8. Pay attention to the date the coffee was roasted, two weeks after the beans have been roasted they start losing flavor. After three weeks, coffee has probably lost most of the flavor it should have. 8. If it doesn't have the date it was roasted, don't buy it! |
